Building a Movement

The Association of Counseling Sexology & Sexual Wellness (ACSSW) was developed by a group of counselors and counselor educators focused on the promotion of research and training for all counselors in the area of sexuality and who view this as a core competency in the field of counseling.

2018
Foundation
ACSSW was founded by a pioneering group of counselors and counselor educators who recognized the critical need for specialized training and research in sexuality counseling. The founding members envisioned an organization that would promote sexuality as a core competency in the counseling field.
2019-2020
Early Growth
Built foundational structures including committees for Education & Training, Research & Scholarship, and Social Justice & Advocacy. Launched monthly webinar series providing free continuing education credits to members. Began publishing the quarterly ACSSW Newsletter.
March 5, 2021
ACA Organizational Affiliate
ACSSW became the newest Organizational Affiliate of the American Counseling Association, marking a pivotal milestone in our growth and recognition within the broader counseling profession. This affiliation validated our mission and expanded our reach.
2022
Journal Launch
Successfully launched the Journal of Counseling Sexology & Sexual Wellness (JCSSW), a peer-reviewed publication advancing research and scholarship in the field. Expanded Board of Directors to include Trustees and additional representatives.
2023
Division Status Application
Submitted application for Division status within ACA. Launched the Dr. Mark Pope Emerging Leaders Program to develop the next generation of sexuality counseling leaders. Held first elections for Board positions, demonstrating organizational maturity.
2024
Exemplary Practices Development
Completed development of Exemplary Practices for Counseling Sexology and Sexual Wellness. Planned inaugural annual conference. Re-engaged sexuality competencies task force to develop certification standards.
2025
Current & Future
Hosting first annual ACSSW conference. Implementing certification for sexuality competencies. Developing state branches to expand local impact. Continuing to advocate for inclusion of sexuality curriculum in CACREP-accredited programs.
